BSc in Computing

Computers and the Internet are ubiquitous. Everyone is using them, but a degree in Computing is about getting "under their skin". Learning how they do what they do, and making them do what you want them to!

The study of Computing is much more than just learning to use computers. Computing at Stirling provides a firm foundation in the design and development of software and information systems with particular emphasis on networks including the Internet. We deal in detail with the technology used in developing computer games, with multimedia systems and with networking and database technologies and how they support eBusiness.

"I enjoyed the hands-on computing science approach"

"experience of working as part of a team"

"problem solving was the most enjoyable part of the degree course"

faces

Study at Stirling offers several advantages, the most important of which is the flexibility of the degree programme. Not only can you study a wide range of Computing topics during your degree, there are lots of combined degree schemes available.

The academic year at Stirling is divided into two 15 week semesters. Individual course modules last one semester, and these modules form the basis of all degree schemes. Each module is assessed individually - so there is no big final Honours examination.

Our department is welcoming - staff doors are always wide open and you can be sure of a high degree of personal attention.

Computing facilities in the department, and the network infrastructure, are all state of the art and regularly updated. You'll make use of the University's workstations (mainly PCs), and departmental facilities (PCs running Windows XP and Sun Ultra-10s running Unix), all linked to the campus network and beyond that to the Internet. You will be encouraged to take advantage of electronic mail and the World-Wide Web.

Our labs are always open (24/7) and so you can choose times that suit you. Wireless support allows students to connect to our network with their own laptops if they so wish.

A further advantage is the campus itself: a beautiful, exciting and friendly place to be with facilities including the Sports Centre, complete with new Olympic-sized pool, the newly refurbished MacRobert Arts Centre, and the Students Union.
