1) Download the file ftp://ftp.neuron.yale.edu/neuron/mac/nrn5.hqx
2) The above file was a binhexed self extracting stuffit archive and may have been automatically unstuffed by your browser. If so then you can move or rename the newly created folder to any name you wish. If not, then double click on the downloaded file to unstuff it.
3)Test the installation as follows:
In the new folder there is a program called neuron and a folder called
demo which contains a file called demo.hoc. Drag the demo.hoc file onto
the neuron program. Each of the demos are executed by selecting their radiobutton
and then pressing the Init&Run button.
4) If you anticipate using NEURON regularly, you should create aliases for neuron and mknrndll and put them on your desktop. If you launch neuron by dragging a hoc file onto the alias then the folder of the hoc file will be the working directory, the nrnmac.dll file (if any) in that folder will be automatically loaded, and the hoc file will be interpreted. You can create a nrnmac.dll file from mod files by dragging the folder containing the mod files onto the mknrndll alias.
You can setup your browser to do the above automatically.
This is for Netscape but other browsers are similar.
Select the Edit/Preferences menu item.
In the Preferences panel select Navigator/Applications.
Select New
Fill in the blanks with...
Description: NEURON
MIME Type: application/mos2nrn
Suffixes: nrnzip
Then select application and choose mos2nrn from the folder containing the
neuron program.
