Installing FortiClient and connecting to the VPN

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection is a secure connection between your home PC to the university network.
You will need to use FortiClient to make a VPN connection from off campus to allow remote desktop connection to Computing Science Labs.

Installing the client

Follow the link below to the FortiClient installer for your hardware.

Download the relevant installer from Sharepoint, then double click the installer and follow the installation instructions.

For Linux installation, see Linux install instructions (at the foot of that page).

For Chrome OS, the FortiClient VPN app is available at the Google Play Store.

Connecting and disconnecting to the VPN

  • For Windows, double click the FortiClient icon on your desktop.
  • For macOS, click the VPN icon on the menu bar in the top right (a shield containing small rectangles) and select "Connect to vpn.stir.ac.uk".
  • Now enter your University username and password in the format you'd use to login to the university network or portal. (e.g. xyz00000 - Do not prefix your username with stirlan or students).
  • Click on "Connect" to complete the connection.
  • You will be asked to authenticate the VPN connection.
    You must check that your Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is setup correctly.
  • To disconnect, click on the FortiClient or VPN icon again and select Disconnect.
