Possible Uses for Jini

There are high-profile examples of Jini being used as a networking technology. For example, the US Military are investing heavily in Jini to develop their next-generation battlefield communication systems.

Compared to the uptake of UPnP, Jini has not proved to be popular for smaller devices like mobile telephones and hand-held computers. This is likely due to the system overheads. Also, UPnP devices can be programmed to work on a Jini Network, but a Jini device cannot work with UPnP.

Applications to Home Care

Jini is similar to UPnP, and therefore offers the same possibilities for creating integrated Home Care systems. Jini does work within the OSGi layer which the University of Stirling is basing its work on, so solutions are easy to implement.

Possible applications include some form of centralised care centre where care workers can remotely check a person's condition or abnormalities in the home status. Examples of the latter could be the house being too cold or the water heating being left on when the owner is absent.
