What is X10?
X10 is a system for controlling mains-powered appliances and lighting using signals carried over mains power cables. It was created over twenty years ago by a small Scottish engineering company called Pico Electronics and has become quite successful.
The idea behind the technology is that any number of X10 modules can be plugged into the existing wiring system of an ordinary home. These modules can receive signals from a controller. For example, this might send a signal through the internal wiring, activating a module that turns a light on or off.
